My research aims to unravel the genetic and developmental basis of phenotypic traits and the evolutionary processes underlying their evolution. My work focuses on identifying the genes responsible for changes in the morphology of genitalia within and between species of the D. melanogaster subgroup using QTL and introgression mapping of high quality state-of-the-art phenotypic (using scanning electron microscopy and morphometric analysis) and genotypic data (using multiplexed shotgun genotyping). I have now started to test the effect of evolved genomic regions on mating behaviour and reproductive fitness in order to understand the contribution of morphological divergence in male genitalia to the evolution of reproductive isolation, and to help explain genital evolution in fruit flies.
