I work on how plant cells communicate with each other when under attack by fungal and bacterial pathogens. I am interested in how a threatened cell sends out warnings to neighbouring cells and what role this has in how plants defend themselves. I completed my PhD at the University of Sydney (Australia) and have since worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Edinburgh, the John Innes Centre and the Sainsbury Laboratory. When a plant cell is attacked by a pathogen a variety of defence responses are triggered in that cell that prevent further invasion of the pathogen. All plant cells are connected to each other via channels called plasmodesmata. These channels close to isolate the attacked cell early during pathogen attack, presumably to prevent the spread of toxic molecules involved in defence responses. I am working to understand how plasmodesmata close and open during pathogen attack and how an attacked cell sends signals to its neighbours to warn them of imminent invasion.
