I have been lecturing in Marine Policy since 1994 at the University of Hull, where I have served on several apex committees including the Council, Senate and Court, amongst others. I am a Senior Tutor of the University and the Admissions Tutor for the Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences. I have attended, at various times, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, International Ocean Institute Malta, Aachen Technical University Germany, Dalhousie University Canada, London School of Economics UK and Harvard University USA. After graduating in 1977 in Mining Engineering, I researched in blasting physics, taught mining engineering, worked as an ocean engineer and researched in marine policy before coming to Hull. Ocean and Environmental Governance has been the focus of my work since 1982.

My academic interests lie in Ocean and Environmental Governance, to include marine and environmental law and policy, integrated coastal zone management. I travel widely and speak frequently on these issues within the purview of my MasterClass and I am well known in international conference circuits. The MasterClass addresses what I call the ‘Seven Pillars’ - viz, Science and technology, Geopolitical economy, Institutions and organizations, Legislations and implementation, Role of civil society, Financial initiatives, and Education and awareness. I am actively involved in the work of Greenwich Forum, UK All Party Parliamentary Group, International Union for the Conservation of the Nature, International Law Association, Oslo and Paris Commission, International Council for Exploration of the Seas, Society for Underwater Technology and the Global Forum on Oceans Coasts and Islands, amongst others. Locally, I work with the Flamborough Head Maritime Forum and I was the Secretary of the erstwhile Marine Forum for Environmental Issues.
