Dr. Yan obtained BSc and PhD in Chemistry from Lanzhou University and the University of Nottingham, respectively. He has experience working in Nottingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

His research is maily focused on design and synthesis of novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the crystal structure characterisations of these materials using in situ crystallography methods such as single crystal and powder X-ray and neutron diffraction. Main results include: 1) The first-time synthesis of hexa-carboxylate linkers for the construction of MOF materials showing high performance for hydrogen and natural gas storage, and the explaination of adsorption mechanisms analyzed by using in situ neutron powder diffraction; 2) In situ high pressure crystallography proves the rare negative linear compressibility in a type of Zr-MOFs; 3) The innovative synthesis of flexible MOFs based on amino acid building units, and the characterisation of the dynamic structural response behaviors using in situ powder X-ray diffraction. He has published a total of 30 research papers including Nat. Chem., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Acc. Chem. Res., Chem. Soc. Rev. and Chem. Sci. Publications have achieved total citations of >3000 and his H-index is 21.
