Dr. Louise Mackenzie (nee LS Harrington) is a senior lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Hertfordshire, and is an honorary lecturer of pharmacology and toxicology at Imperial College, London. I have worked and studied at numerous universities, including Oxford University (The Welcome Trust for Human Genetics) and UCL (the Hatter Institute), which gave a solid background in molecular biology. I went on to complete my PhD in 2003 at the NHLI, Imperial College (St Mary’s Hospital) in medical biochemsitry, working on human vascular smooth muscle cell signalling pathways. For the following 10 years I worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the NHLI (Imperial College) and the William Harvey Research Institute (Queen Mary’s University) and formed a close working relationship with Prof Jane Mitchell and Prof Tim Warner. My current research areas are eicosanoid and PPAR biology in cardiovascular and respiratory pharmacology, with specific interests in the role and modulation of vasoactive hormones. Research expertise extends into resistance vessel bioassay in vitro with particular reference to the role and modulation of nitric oxide, eicosanoids, cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes, and PPARβ/δ receptors on organ function.
