个人简介

Samuel joined the Medical School in 2014 and his teaching focus is on the broad specialism of systems physiology. His primary interest is on cardiac physiology and contractility. Samuel teaches on both the BMBS and Medical Science courses. Before joining the Medical School Samuel completed his PhD which focused on the area of the validation of the work loop technique in a myocardial muscle model and investigations into cardioprotective interventions in the aged heart. Samuel has also held a lecturing post at Coventry University (2011-12) and was one of the leading academics in the formation of Coventry University College Science department (2012-14), which was primarily designed to widen participation in HE. His role within the department includes teaching and facilitating small group learning on both the BMBS and Medical Science courses. He is also the physiology lead across both these programmes. Qualifications 2007 BSc(Hons) Clinical Physiology 2012 PhD Physiology/pharmacology, Coventry University 2014 Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Samuel‘s research has primarily focused on the use of the ex-vivo contractility model; the work loop technique, which is a physiologically more relevant measurement of cardiac contractility in an in vitro model. One area of his research has been to create an ex-vivo human cardiac model using the harvested right atrial appendage from consented patients undergoing routine coronary artery bypass surgery and/or valve repairs/replacement surgery. The idea being that we can use this model to investigate the changes that occur to human cardiac muscle in differing disease states and how it responds to novel therapeutic interventions.
