个人简介

Dr David Melzer is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Medical School, University of Exeter, UK. His research interests are in the causes and consequences of chronic disease in later life. His group’s research programme includes analysis of genomic and conventional biomarkers, plus studies of medical treatment in later life. He trained in medicine in South Africa (graduating 1981), studied public health at the London School of Hygiene and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. He received a Harkness Fellowship in 1998, spent at the Guralnik laboratory at the US National Institute on Aging. He worked as an NHS consultant in Public Health Medicine in the early 1990s before becoming a full time academic. He was formerly Director of the Epidemiology for Policy Group, in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, University of Cambridge. Prof. Melzer has received research support from the US National Institutes of Health, the Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation, the Medical Research Council, Age UK, NIHR and other funders. 1981 MB BCh Medicine and Surgery, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa 1987 MSc Community Medicine, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine 1998 Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health Medicine 2006 PhD Public Health, Cambridge University

研究领域

First evidence (to the best of my knowledge) in a human population of splice ratio changes with advancing age (Aging cell, 2011) First evidence in older humans that CEBP-Beta expression is associated with muscle strength – concordant with a mouse model of macrophage mediated muscle repair (Aging Cell, 2012) First report of CCR2 expression in humans associated with cognitive impairment – concordant with mouse model of beta-amyloid phagocytosis in Alzheimer’s mouse model (Rejuvenation Research, 2012) The first longitudinal analysis of low vitamin D levels, showing association with later cognitive impairment in older people (Archives of Internal Medicine, 2010) First evidence of p16 (CDKN2a, 9p21) loci SNP associated with frailty – nearby loci later implicated in diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Mechanisms of Ageing & Development, 2007) The first studies linking environmental endocrine disrupting chemical BPA to adult disease in the general population (JAMA, 2008) with first longitudinal study (Circulation, 2012).
