Dr David Llewellyn is a Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Exeter Medical School. Dr Llewellyn has a background in neuropsychology and is a Chartered Psychologist and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. His research focuses on the risk factors, overlapping pathologies and functional consequences of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, particularly where vascular and metabolic pathways are implicated. He conducted the first population-based studies to identify the associations between vitamin D deficiency and cognitive impairment in the Health Survey for England and cognitive decline in the InCHIANTI study, both of which were widely reported in the international media. More recently he has begun to investigate how systems medicine can be applied to generate novel ideas and improve the way in which we conceptualize neurocognitive disorders in order to improve diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Dr. Llewellyn was the first UK-based researcher to receive a New Investigator Award from the Alzheimer’s Association and also receives support from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care for the South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC) and other funders.
