个人简介

Nick is a molecular biologist and science educator who teaches on the BMBS Medicine and BSc Medical Sciences undergraduate degree programmes at Exeter. After completing his degree in Biochemistry at Warwick, he undertook a PhD in the research group of Prof. Fred Antson in the chemistry department at York. His work there was on the structural basis of single-stranded RNA recognition by TRAP, a regulatory protein found in Bacillus subtilis. This was followed by further structural work as a post-doctoral researcher in Prof. Christine Cardin's group at Reading, this time focused on cytotoxic bis-intercalator binding to higher order DNA assemblies. Nick's second post-doctoral position was in Prof. Panos Soultanas' group at Nottingham and concerned the B. subtilis DNA replication proteins DnaB and DnaD. Nick was later appointed to the post of Deputy Funding Round Manager at the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), a key role in the governance and financial management of the English higher education sector. He followed this with a short period as a Grants Advisor at the Wellcome Trust, before commencing his university teaching career at Keele. He began work at Peninsula Medical School a year later and is currently involved in developing the University of Exeter curricula in both Medicine and Medical Sciences. He is Co-Lead for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology across all programmes and holds major positions regarding the 1st year of both degree courses. He is also involved in running the Student-Selected Component (SSC) of the BMBS degree and has education research interests in Team-Based Learning (TBL). Qualifications BSc Biochemistry (Warwick), 2000 PhD Chemistry (York), 2004 PgCert Academic Practice (Exeter), 2012 Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, 2012
