研究领域

The laboratory was established in the Autumn of 2003 and uses state-of-the-art molecular and cell biology to investigate cell signalling in plants during the vegetative-floral transition. In the long-term, this research aims to provide new understanding of systemic signalling in plants through the interaction between transductive models of cell signalling and inductive, transcriptional models of flowering. I have previously shown that circadian and diurnal Ca2+ oscillations may encode information regarding the length of the light-dark cycle in which plants are grown, and are pursuing this observation further. I have developed A. thaliana that are impaired in circadian Ca2+ signalling, and am using these as well as mutant plants to investigate the role of Ca2+-mediated signal transduction. The laboratory is particularly interested in applying and developing recombinant technologies to image and quantify metabolites and cellular signalling components, particularly ascorbate and Ca2+. To facilitate this goal, we have developed several cross-disciplinary collaborations, most notably with Dr. N. Smirnoff (metabolic signalling). The laboratory fosters a collaborative approach to science in pure and applied research, and has partnerships within Exeter University, the South-West and Internationally.
