I am a quantitative ecologist, with key interests in demography, life history evolution, and the interplay between ecological and evolutionary dynamics. I study the robustness of empirical models of population and community dynamics, with application to strategies of conservation management and the exploitation of natural resources. My goal is to lend ecology a predictive framework, and to help explain (and conserve) biodiversity. I study the evolution of structured life histories in plants and animals, with a focus on life history evolution in disturbed environments. I study wildlife disease with a focus on badgers and bovine tuberculosis. I also study the maintenance of phenotypic variation in natural systems, such as viruses in insects, antiherbivore metabolites in plants, and niche specialists in bacterial microcosms.
