Microbes are ubiquitous in nature and occupy virtually every environmental niche on earth. Contributing to this evolutionary success are diverse metabolic strategies as well as the ability to adapt to changing environments.
Microbes can be extremely beneficial. They play an important role in cycling vital elements such as carbon and nitrogen and can be used for biodegradation of soil and water pollutants.
However microbes can also have devastating impact on human heath. They are the biggest killer of hospital patients in intensive care units. Moreover microbes can also cause severe plant disease and are responsible for huge harvest losses each year.
Experimental evolution has provided an ideal setting for studying microbes in action – from the adaptation to novel environments, diversification, through to the evolution of drug resistance. Such experiments are conducted in controlled environments using culturable strains that are easily manipulated, raising the following important questions: How do we know whether a given experimental outcome is particular to the laboratory system? What can we learn from laboratory experiments about microorganisms in the wild?
My group utilizes theoretical and experimental approaches to answer fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. By developing novel modeling approaches that bring together cellular, molecular, genetic levels systems biology into a population level framework we strive to bridge the gap between laboratory experiments and the real world. We also closely collaborate with microbiologists and experimental evolutionary biologists from all over the world.
