研究领域

I co-ordinate the Marine Turtle Research Group with Annette Broderick which allows us to carry out a wide range of projects aimed at unlocking the secrets of marine turtle ecology; many relevant to conservation. This has involved fieldwork in Ascension Island, British Virgin Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Cayman Islands, Guinea Bissau, Montserrat, Northern Cyprus, Turkey and the USA. Much of our work focuses on the long-term scientific monitoring of the status of marine turtle populations but has also involved diverse ethological, physiological and ecological studies. In the last few years I have been making extensive use of satellite tracking to gain insights into the migratory ecology of marine turtles. This involves investigating routes taken and the spatial behaviour of turtles once they reach the foraging grounds, with particular reference to overwintering strategies and involved integrating tracking data with remote sensed oceanographic datasets. As well as having fundamental and applied ramifications, data collected are of immense popular interest. Through my partnership with the USA-based NGO Seaturtle.org, we have helped develop an online site where the public can track marine vertebrates in near real time. Visit the tracking site.
