I am a molecular biologist studying yeast and other micro-organisms. I have research interests in DNA replication, the cell division cycle and genome organisation, molecular and synthetic biology approaches applied to biofuel production in micro-organisms, and microbial consortia. I teach molecular genetics and I am Academic Lead for the Education group. 研究领域

DNA replication and genome organisation. Before a cell can divide it must first copy its genome, and even a small mistake in DNA replication can lead to a problem such as the production of a cell that can cause cancer. We investigate the DNA replication complex using molecular and genetic strategies, with cells of the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a model. Our research focuses on the essential Mcm10 initiation protein, its interactions with other DNA replication components, and the evolution of DNA replication components in eukaryotes. Microbial biofuel production. We are using molecular genetic, bioinformatic and synthetic biology methods to study biofuel production in micro-organisms as part of the Exeter Microbial Biofuels Group. Our particular interests are in oleaginous yeasts, and developing molecular genetic tools for researching, exploitation and metabolic engineering of these fungi. Microbial consortia. Micro-organisms frequently live in multi-species consortia, but the composition and interactions of these are often poorly understood. In collaboration with others, we use metagenomics and bioinformatic analysis to investigate microbial consortia associated with hydrocarbon generation and acid mine drainage.
