研究领域

I have an ongoing research programme which has adopted a systematic analysis of the complex nature of social support. Three keys aims are: 1) To improve the measurement of social support. 2) To identify the effects of social support and factors which influence its effectiveness. 3) To understand what leads individuals to view other people as supportive. I am also interested in the role of stress appraisals in achievement contexts. My research in this area has two key aims: 1) To identify factors that lead individuals to view demanding situations as a challenge rather than a threat. 2) To identify how challenge appraisals lead to enhanced performance. Another area of my research focuses on the values children hold towards sport and physical education. Two key aims are: 1) To examine how social factors influence youth sport values. 2) To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to promote participation in sport and physical activity. For example, I am currently working with Dr Gavin Sandercock on two interrelated funded projects (by Active Essex and an ESRC Impact Accelerator award) to evaluate the impact of the primary school PE Premium. I have also recently set up a series of projects to examine psychosocial factors that underpin athletes’ attitudes towards doping.
