Dr Samir Ayoub joined the School of Health and Bioscience as a lecturer in pharmacology in 2011. He graduated with a BSc in pharmacology from UEL in 2000, after which he joined the William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI), as a PhD student to investigate the role of novel cyclooxygenase variant enzymes during inflammation, pain and thermoregulation (2000-2004). As a post-doctorate scientist at WHRI Samir was awarded an Early Career Fellowship by the Leverhulme Trust (2006-2008), to further his work on novel cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-3) in thermoregulation. As part of this fellowship Samir worked in the laboratory of Professor Daniel Simmons, Brigham Young University, Utah, USA in 2008. During his time at the WHRI, Samir worked on other projects which included identification of the mechanism of the regulatory function of annexin-A1 protein in acute pain and also in the development of allergic reactions. In 2010, Samir moved to Imperial College London, where he investigated the mechanism of pro-angiogenic action of mesenchymal stem cells. Samir is currently a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology and the Programme Leader for Pharmacology and continues to lead research on the pharmacology of cyclooxygenase enzymes.

Samir is interested in the development of novel drug targets for the treatment of inflammatory, immune-mediated and painful conditions of the periphery and central nervous system including multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. He continues to lead research on the mechanism of action of paracetamol and has recently been focussing on the use of paracetamol for new therapeutic purposes. Dr Ayoub is currently investigating the mechanisms of anti-inflammatory actions of certain medicinal herbs. Samir is interested in the development of novel drug targets for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. He is involved in the supervision of PhD students working on projects aimed at elucidating the mechanism of action of paracetamol. .
