研究领域

My primary research interest relates to the role of dietary flavonoids (naturally occurring compounds found in foods of plant origin) on health and wellbeing throughout the life course. To this extent, I have a particular interest and track-record in conducting human intervention studies (from acute, single dose studies, to longer-term studies lasting months /years), especially in populations at elevated risk of heart disease and diabetes. My research to date has predominantly focused on the impact of anthocyanins (e.g. berries, and some other fruits and vegetables), isoflavones (e.g. soy), flavanones (e.g. citrus fruits) and flavan-3-ols (e.g. cocoa, tea) and, with colleagues at the Department of Nutrition of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine, our principle focus is cardio-metabolic health and flavonoid bioavailability. Details of our ongoing 6-month dose response blueberry study can be found here: http://www.blueberrystudy.org/. In this study, participants with confirmed metabolic syndrome are being assessed for insulin resistance (directly, and indirectly assessed) and a range of relevant endpoints; including endothelial function, arterial stiffness, cognition, lung function and the interaction with the microbiome (amongst other things). In my role as trial coordinator in studies at UEA I have the fortuitous position of daily interaction with our dedicated study participants, and also benefit from working alongside a range of highly motivated scientists and PhD students, clinicians and research nurses. Alongside my research role, I sit on the Norwich Medical School Research Committee and the Clinical Research Facility Joint Management Group. Previous research experience has included assessing the impact of community based dietary interventions in a broad range of settings and I retain an interest in the role of exercise and activity in disease prevention and recuperation.
