MRC research fellow since September 2011, studying the structural biology of Neisserial pathogenesis and iron uptake. Pathogenic Neisseria species cause life threatening illness (N. meningitidis - meningitis and septicaemia) and sexually transmitted disease (N. gonorrhoea - gonorrhoea). For survival in their human host, Neisseria must aquire iron. However, almost all iron inside the host is complexed to proteins such as haemoglobin, leaving very little bioavailable iron in the blood and other bodily fluids for pathogens. To overcome this Neisseria sp. express outer membrane proteins (called TonB dependent transporters) that are able to extract iron directly from host proteins, including haemoglobin. We are currently studying the structural basis of haem iron extraction from haemoglobin by the HpuAB system.
