个人简介

Successful control of bacterial infections is without a doubt one of the most important achievements of modern medicine. However, the rapid spread of antibiotic resistance, return of old pathogens and emergence of new opportunistic infections, in part due to the HIV pandemic, fuel an unrelenting need to develop new antimicrobial treatments and vaccines. These endpoints rely heavily on a better understanding of the mechanisms of virulence. journals In our laboratory we use a wide variety of biochemical, molecular and cellular biology approaches together with advanced imaging techniques to study the molecular pathogenesis of Gram-negative pathogens such as enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), that causes haemorrhagic colitis and haemolytic uraemic syndrome, enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), which causes paediatric diarrhoea, for which we pioneered the murine Citrobacter rodentium (aka mouse EPEC) model of EPEC and EHEC infection and Salmonella enterica serovars, including S. Typhi, which caused typhoid fever. More recently we launched a complementary project aimed at studying infection with Legionella pneumophila, an intracellular pathogen that causes an acute form of pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ disease. In recent decades promotion of healthier lifestyles has led to increased demand for fresh produce in many industrialized nations; their consumption is encouraged to protect against a range of illnesses such as cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Coincided with this trend is the emergence of fresh produce as a major vehicle for transmission of enteric pathogens that were traditionally classified as zoonotic. In our laboratory we study the association enteric human pathogens (particularly E. coli pathotypes and Salmonella enterica) with fresh produce, including salad leaves and tomatoes.
