Mike graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BSc and a PhD. Following post-doctoral research at the University of Kent, Mike moved to Huddersfield in 1993 as a Senior Lecturer, and is the Admissions Tutor for all of the biology courses. Mike's current research is about the control of Gene Expression in Lower Eukaryotes and Prokaryotes. Like many of the staff within the School, Mike likes to spend much of his free time on a hobby not usually associated with the humdrum of day to day life. He has a long held love for the world of aeronautics and aviation. Twenty years ago, whilst still at university, he learned to parachute and subsequently to skydive. This resulted in a seven year career of throwing himself out of perfectly serviceable aircraft, relying on 220 square feet of rip-stop nylon to stop him plummeting to earth. During this time he amassed over 520 jumps. In the early nineties, and now with a young family, Mike decided to start living a more responsible life and hung up his jumpsuit for good. By this time however, the "call of the sky" was in his blood and he found himself yearning to be "back up there". In 2002 he decided to go to the "pointy end" of the plane and to learn to fly a light aircraft. Mike was awarded his private pilots' licence in 2004, and now spends as much time as the weather (and his money) permits, flying round the skies of Yorkshire.
