个人简介

My scientific career began with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, after which I went on to complete my PhD research at the University of Newcastle. Under the guidance of Professor Nick Simmons in the Epithelial Research Group, I spent 3 years investigating the regulation of ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporters by the pregnane X receptor. This was followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship with AstraZeneca, developing a modified Ussing chamber system to investigate cross-species intestinal absorption. Returning to academic research, I spent 4 years working with Professor Ralf Paus at the University of Manchester. Here I developed an interest in cutaneous biology, specifically investigating mechanisms for hair follicle defence against endogenous and exogenous stressors, including oxidative and xenobiotic. In 2015 I joined the University of Huddersfield as a Senior Lecturer in Biological Sciences where I continue research into my twin interests of skin biology and active transport processes.

研究领域

I am primarily interested in active transport processes, in particular energy-dependent efflux mediated by ABC transporters. Having spent a number of years investigating the impact of ABC transporters on drug-drug interactions and the intestinal absorption of drug molecules, more recently I have been examining their roles in the skin, specifically focusing on the hair follicle. I recently identified the expression of numerous ABC transporter proteins within the hair follicle and this has led on to current investigations into their ability to modulate hair follicle drug penetration, with a view to understanding their impact on drug toxicity and hair loss during chemotherapy. Furthermore, the physiological roles of the ABC transporter family are increasingly appreciated. To this end I am investigating whether ABC transporter activity in the hair follicle might influence the movement and compartmentalization of lipid signalling activities. Understanding the role of active transport in regulating hair growth, cycling and development could have important implications for a number hair growth disorders.
