个人简介

Lisa graduated from the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry with French, which included a placement year in a research laboratory at Bordeaux University, France. This was followed by a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Colin Greaves at Birmingham with a thesis entitled "Structural and Magnetic Characterisation of Manganese containing Perovskite-related Materials" (2002). She then carried out postdoctoral research at Caen University in France and then returned to the U.K to the Department of Engineering Materials at Sheffield University in 2004. In October 2005, she took up a position as a Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, where she is involved mainly in the teaching of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry. Lisa's research interests lie in Solid-state Inorganic Chemistry and Crystallography, principally involving the study of transition-metal oxides derived from the Perovskite structure.

研究领域

Modern technologies, such as mobile phones and computers, require ceramic components with interesting electrical and magnetic properties in order to function. As devices become smaller, it is essential to find new compositions and crystal structures which offer improved performance. The discovery of new materials is therefore essential for this continuous development. Ceramics, often based on mixed transition metal oxides, have proven to be a rich source of materials for many applications, exhibiting properties such as ferroelectricity, superconductivity, and magnetoresistance, to name but a few. In particular, crystal structures derived from the mineral Perovskite (CaTiO3 / ABO3) are used in a diverse array of applications, ranging from cathodes in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) to ceramic resonators in microwave communication devices. The perovskite structure shows great compositional flexibility, due to its ability to distort to accommodate different sized ions within its framework. Consequently a wide variety of related crystal structures have been reported, varying in both composition and dimensionality. Structure and properties are strongly correlated and often a very minor distortion of the crystal structure, or displacement of an ion, can lead to a significant variation in the physical properties observed. Therefore in order to synthesise new functional materials with optimised properties, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the crystal structure on an atomic level. Research in the Gillie group focuses on the synthesis and structural characterisation of functional metal oxide materials, and the evolution of crystal structure of layered perovskites as a function of composition and temperature. This is achieved primarily using high resolution diffraction techniques and Rietveld structural refinement. Current projects are underway in the following areas: The development of microwave techniques for physical property measurement in ceramic, glass-ceramic and glassy materials (in collaboration with Dr. Gareth M.B. Parkes) Cation-ordering in new ferroelectric materials with the Aurivillius structure Structure-property-composition relations in B-site deficient hexagonal perovskites
