I completed my BSc (Hons) in Chemistry at the University of Bath. This included a sandwich placement year working in medical research at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow. During my final year I became interested in Surface Science and decided to do a PhD at Southampton University with Prof. Brian Hayden. This involved using supersonic molecular beams to study the sticking probability of molecules on well defined single crystal surfaces. We were the first to demonstrate the importance of vibrational energy, as well as translational energy, in the dissociation of hydrogen on copper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 63 (1989) 1823). I then spent three years in Berlin as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft with Prof. Alex Bradshaw and Dr. Horst Conrad. I studied thermal and photochemical reactions on surfaces using different types of vibrational spectroscopy. Since taking up a lectureship in Physical Chemistry at the University of Huddersfield I have continued to carry out research in different areas of Surface Science, including thin organic films, UV photochemistry, and structural analysis using photoelectron diffraction. The latter is in collaboration with groups at Warwick University and the Fritz-Haber-Institut. More recently I have become interested in food science, particularly how different food preparation techniques affect the mineral composition of root vegetables. As well as research, I currently teach Physical Chemistry at all levels and am interested in developing new teaching methods. . I spent five years as course leader for MChem Chemistry with Industrial Experience, BSc (Hons) Chemistry, MSci/BSc (Hons) in Forensic & Analytical Science and MSci/BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science.

For many years my general area of interest has been Surface Science - i.e. the study of the interactions of small molecules with well-defined single crystal surfaces. Many industrial processes, including heterogeneous catalysis, lithography and surface processing rely on adsorption and reaction at surfaces. Surface Science encompasses studies on the dynamics of the adsorption process (i.e. the adsorption probability, the activation barrier for adsorption); the chemical nature and the geometry of the adsorbed species as well as thermally and photochemically induced reactions at surfaces. I have used a variety of techniques to study these phenomena, including molecular beams, vibrational spectroscopies (high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and low frequency infrared vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR)) and photoionisation spectroscopies (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS)). I I have been involved in a collaboration with the University of Warwick and the Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in Berlin using photoelectron diffraction (PhD) for the accurate determination of adsorption sites. With this technique the adsorption site, the molecular orientation, local reconstructions of the surface and bond lengths can all be determined with a relatively high degree of precision. During the last couple of years I have started working in a new research area, namely the leaching of potassium from vegetables. The project is aimed at developing food preparation techniques which will reduce the potassium content of certain vegetables down to a level where they can be safely consumed by people with poor kidney function.
