Cathy graduated from University of Newcastle Medical School in 1986 and subsequently trained on the Northumbria Vocational Training Scheme for General Practice. Between 1990 and 2000 she worked as a GP in North Tyneside where she developed a passion for medical education. Cathy worked as a clinical tutor within the Department of Primary Care at the University of Newcastle during this time and had the opportunity to teach medical undergraduates across all stages of the curriculum.
In 2000, Cathy moved to Teesside and since then has worked as a GP principal in Middlesbrough. She has been teaching within Durham University Phase 1 Medicine curriculum since 2001; her particular interests are within the fields of clinical skills, clinical communication and professionalism. In 2007 she was appointed as Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow within Durham University School of Medicine and Health.
Cathy enjoys postgraduate teaching and has taught medical education for many years. She has acted as a course tutor on the Certificate of Clinical Education programme at the University of Newcastle and now teaches medical education and professionalism within the Masters’ programme at Durham University. In 2007 Cathy was awarded a Masters’ Degree in Clinical Education from the University of Newcastle and in 2012 was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
