Dr Cole’s research aims to develop nanostructured electron sources and integrate them into desktop-scale applications. The principle themes include: elucidating the underlying growth mechanisms of carbon nanotubes and graphene growth by chemical vapour deposition, developing routes towards aligned synthesis of carbon nanotubes, and the heterogeneous integration of various nanomaterials to develop truly portable diode and triode field emission electron and X-ray sources. Many mass critical applications such as travelling wave tubes, microwave amplifiers and displays require inexpensive, light weight electron sources that can be rapidly modulated whilst free electron lasers and electron microscopy applications require high brightness and fine control over the beam properties. Novel emitter morphologies are investigated to facilitate beam profiling, enhanced collimation whilst simultaneously affording rapid pulsed operation, all of which are critical for incumbent food security, medical diagnostics, spectroscopy, and border control systems.
