Ann did her undergraduate training at Liverpool University and then trained in General Medicine gaining her MRCP. Her clinical training was undertaken in Liverpool and London at the Middlesex and Royal Brompton Hospitals. It was during this time that she decided to specialise in Respiratory Medicine. She undertook an initial period of research in respiratory physiology for her MD at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Whilst a Lecturer at the Middlesex Hospital she subsequently undertook a further period of research funded by the Sir Jules Thorne Trust into the cell biology of acute lung injury. This has remained the on-going theme of her subsequent research. In 1990 she was appointed as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Bath and Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust. She subsequently moved to Bristol where she established the Academic Respiratory Unit, a collaborative group of scientists, clinicians, technicians and research nurses.
