Professor Ashley Blom studied Medicine in Cape Town graduating in 1991. In 1994 he emigrated to the UK and undertook his postgraduate training as an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Bristol, being made a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in England in 1997, and receiving a Fellowship in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery in 2003. He received a PhD from the University of Bristol in 2003 for work on artificial bone graft substitutes and a MD, also from the University of Bristol, in 2006 for work on preventing wound infection in joint replacement surgery. In 2007 he was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon in the UK to be awarded a prestigious HEFCE Clinical Senior Lectureship. In May 2007 he succeeded Professor Learmonth as Head of the Orthopaedic Group of the University of Bristol and in October 2007 he became the cairman of the North Bristol Trust Research Committee. In January 2009 he was promoted to Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery.
