Chris Curtis gained a BSc in Pharmacy from Leicester Pharmacy School in 1976. After completing a pre-registration post with Broadgreen Hospital Liverpool he registered as a Pharmaceutical Chemist in 1977 and worked extensively in the secondary care sector in hospitals in Liverpool, Manchester, Worcester and Burton upon Trent. His last appointment was as Chief Pharmacist at a District General Hospital for a period of 24 years. During this time he was Chair of the Trust Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and many other committees associated with medicines governance within the Trust. He has been a member of a number of National Working Parties working on topics including Medicines Management Services, development of national prescribing indicators development of the future strategy for NHS Pharmaceutical QA Services, defining national functionality for electronic prescribing and also standards for purchasing of pharmaceuticals. He was a national finalist for the Nye Bevan awards 2000 as part of the team that developed electronic prescribing at Burton Hospitals. He has experience of scientific research, completing a PhD to develop and validate a measure for effective comparison of secondary care use of antibiotics in hospitals in England. In 2013 he joined the staff at the College of Medicine and Dentistry as the Senior Lecturer Law, Ethics and Pharmacy Practice. Outside of Pharmacy he was Trust lead for NICE for eight years, was a member of the College of Pharmacy Practice CPD Committee for a number of years and also spent ten years as a member of the Local Research Ethics Committee.
