研究领域

The role of alpha methyl acyl CoA racemase (AMACR/P504S) in prostate cancer. AMACR is an enzyme that is over-expressed in all cases of prostate cancer, and is currently of interest both as a better marker for the disease than the current prostate specific antigen (PSA) test and also as a potential target for inhibition by drug molecules. With Dr Matthew Lloyd, our research group of two PhD students is exploring the molecular biology of AMACR and attempting to identify high-throughput screening methods that will allow the isolation of potential inhibitors for this enzyme. Use of diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and PCA to characterise complex mixtures. DOSY can be applied to complex mixtures to enable the identification of individual compounds with the population. PCA is a technique where large amounts of data are reduced to a set of more simple components, providing much information on how similar (or different) further samples are from these components. Projects involving these techniques include the characterization of seized drug samples and the properties and origins of wines and whiskies.
