Professor Pang's main research focus is on the use of molecular (DNA/RNA) methodologies for accelerating the production of new plant varieties for agriculture. His research team is currently using DNA microarrays, genome maps and PCR-based diagnostics to detect and map genes responsible for resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses in chickpea and vegetable Brassicas. They are investigating quality aspects of food and medicinal plants using molecular tools, for example, the detection of the genes responsible for flavour development in strawberry (using microarrays) and the validation of the identity of Chinese medicinal herbs for quality assurance purposes.
