Research interests include alloy development, strengthening mechanisms, phase transformations, heat treatment and various processing technologies that may be applied to the industrial production of aluminium or other metal products. Improved alloy performance, especially for aerospace, automotive and electrical conductor applications, is achieved by understanding and manipulating the process and its metallurgy along the whole value chain. This covers a broad spectrum of alloys and processing methods, including conventional cast/wrought products, advanced manufacturing such as laser additive manufacturing (3D printing) of metals, and high performance materials such as aluminium-scandium alloys or nickel-based superalloys. Experimental work is complemented by process-microstructure-property modelling where possible.
