Dr Ackland’s research interests are in computational and experimental muscle and joint biomechanics, as well as motor control of human movement. His primary research has involved combining musculoskeletal modelling and simulation of human movement with in vivo and in vitro experimental studies. This has included specific research projects on the shoulder, wrist, jaw, spine and knee. Dr Ackland runs a Neuromuscular Research Laboratory which explores conditions such as stroke and amputation. Dr Ackland's recent work has involved developing the world's first prosthetic jaw joint replacement which was 3D printed in titanium and implanted in a first patient in mid-2015.
