My specific areas of research are: Understanding what determines how effective nitrogen-fixing symbiotic interactions are with the aim of identifying the genetic basis of highly effective symbioses. Applying this information to agriculture will result in more nitrogen fed into the system, a decreased reliance on synthetic fertilisers and ultimately an increase in the N-economy and sustainability of the system. Unravelling the basis of ‘selective nodulation’: One of the biggest problems facing the introduction of new legume species into existing farming systems is the aggressive nodulation of these hosts by ‘resident’ soil rhizobia which fix little or no N. Often, this occurs even when an elite inoculant strain capable of highly effective fixation is supplied with the legume. However a phenomenon of selective nodulation has been identified at the Centre for Rhizobium studies, whereby a host legume can select for a strain capable of highly efficient nitrogen fixation, even if the effective strain is outnumbered in the soil by poorly effective isolates. This work aims to identify the determinants of this phenomenon and apply the findings in the field. Studying root nodule bacteria metabolism and physiology to explain how these organisms cope and survive in the diverse environments of the soil, nodule and plant infection threads as well as understanding how nitrogen fixation is regulated by the plant.
