Early research interests included the chemistry of natural products. My doctoral studies changed the emphasis somewhat and I became interested in waste treatment and the recycling of the ‘nutrient elements’ carbon, nitorgen and phosphorous. The foundations of waste treatment and recycling are the anabolic and catabolic activities of micro-organisms and I soon learned the fact that these little ‘microbes’ run the whole system that we live and depend upon. Since discovering the lithotrophic lifestyle in the early 1990′s, ie. cells that are the ‘rock-eaters’, most of my research has been focussed on their activities and what controls those activities.
