I assisted with the MOU with UWA and am now an Adjunct Professor of UI. I deliver lectures on each visit to UI and have advised on restructuring the Clinical PhD programme. With the head of Neurology at Cipto Mangunkusomo Hospital (Dr Darma Imran) and Dr Evy Yunihastuti, I ran a study of HIV neuropathy in 2006 (publications 137, 139). Dr Evy now co-ordinates clinical care of ~5000 patients at the Pokdisus HIV Clinic. Our research into HCV co-infection has generated 3 PhD projects based at UI (Dr Evy passed 2010, Dr Rino passed 2011 and Henny Saraswati, passed 2014). For Henny’s work we created a laboratory enabled to run most assays operational at UWA, with QC carefully maintained across the two sites. This is a significant achievement. We have now archived samples for a second prospective cohort (n=82). These patients have expert clinical characterization, so the project has a name (JakCCANDO) and has received funding from the Goodeve foundation, Abbot Pharmaceuticals and University of Indonesia. By engaging the workforce and skills of several clinical departments of the Cipto Mangunkusomo Hospital (Neurology, Parasitology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Oral Medicine), this project recapitulates the achievements of a major clinical trial on a minimal budget. JakCCANDO is powering 5 PhD projects at UI. The clinical work is juxtapositioned with high level immunology performed locally following advanced and precise training at UWA. It is a significant undertaking by any metric. A satellite study of JakCCANDO extends our work on HIV neuropathy with 2 more PhD projects beginning at UI in 2014. The work will address the role of co-infections (CMV and TB) in neuropathy and will parallel studies ongoing at University of Witwatersrand.
