Diabetes cause extensive complications in affected individuals and impose a great economic burden. Diabetic retinopathy is the main cause of blindness. Despite extensive basic and clinical research, we are still far from a cure. My primary aim is to understand the mechanism and characterise the pathological changes associated with diabetic retinopathy which progresses to vision loss. We have a transgenic mouse model of neovascularisation which exhibits pathological features similar to clinical diabetic retinopathy. We are currently exploring this model to develop novel therapies including gene therapy with the collaboration with Professor Rakoczy and A/Prof May Lai in the Lion Eye's Institute and, Professor Lyn Beazley and Professor Sarah Dunlop in Animal Biology, UWA.
Another area of my research is the characterisation of drug transporters in mammary epithelial cells. Drug transporters in mammary glands are of clinical, toxicological and nutritional importance. P-glycoprotein, an efflux transporter, has been implicated in protecting the body against foreign substances. To date few studies have addressed the importance of such transporters in the transfer of drugs into breast milk. I aim to establish a mammary epithelial cell culture model and examine the role of P-glycoprotein in transporting drugs into breast milk. The model will be a useful tool to study mechanism underpinning drug transporters and more importantly, enable better identification of drugs that may enter breast milk and cause adverse events in breastfed infants.
