This is particularly true after the Second World War. Globalization and economic restructure of the United States led to a decline in traditional agricultural, forestry, and mining jobs in many rural areas. As a result, rural tourism development was regarded as an important and effective means of rural economic revitalization and diversification. This paper, based on a brief literature review, presents the status quo of rural tourism of the United States in terms of rural tourism resources, recreation counties, and rural tourism development forms. In addition, the paper reviews the rural tourism development processes and driving forces in the country. Finally, both the positive and negative impacts of rural tourism are discussed. Information provided in this paper could be helpful for sustainable rural tourism development in China.
