Biochemistry/Physical/Analytical Chemistry

Research in the Schultz lab aims at developing instrumentation and methodology to detect and analyze molecules in complex samples, often relevant to biomedical problems. We are interested in understanding how the spatial organization of molecules affects their behavior. We utilize laser spectroscopy, including nonlinear spectroscopic methods, and also spectroscopic imaging modalities such as Raman near-field scanning optical microscopy, which is capable of vibrational spectroscopic imaging with a spatial resolution of tens of nanometers. Many of the tools developed in our laboratory use tandem measurement, such as combining electrochemistry with Raman detection to both quantify and identify analytes. One area of emphasis in our lab is increased understanding and the application of localized surface plasmon resonances in metal nanostructures, which are known to give rise to signal enhancements in Raman spectroscopy. Our laboratory has been investigating new approaches to utilizing these enhancements for determining protein - ligand interactions that are common drug targets and regulate signaling processes in cellular membranes. Additionally, nanostructure arrays are being investigated for label-free detection of molecules, particles, and supramolecular assemblies in solution. The chemical information in a Raman spectrum suggests routes to new multivariate biomarkers for disease.
