Biointerface is understood as an interconnection between a synthetic or natural material and tissue, microorganism, cell, virus or biomolecule. Biointerface often refers to the surface of biomaterials that dictates responses of cell and tissue. Therefore, through the engineering of this surface it is possible to regulate biological responses. Dr Chrzanowski's research develops multifunctional surfaces that regulated cell attachment and differentiation. The regulation is achieved using biointerfaces with immobilised protein/peptide that modulated cell responses in a controlled manner. His work focuses also on drug delivery systems that are capable of modulating drug uptake. In particular his research centres around responsive materials that can target disease and control drug release upon external activation. Drug carriers are design to sensitise cells and upregulate drug adsorption. Nano/molecular characterisation of materials. In Dr Chrzanowski's laboratory, he uses state-of-art imaging and probing facilities nanoIR (nanoTA, SThM, LCR), Scanning Ion Conductance Microscope and Molecular Probe equipped in nanopro toolbox used for nanocharacterisation of mechanical properties of materials. Both techniques are fully integrated with fluorescence and light microscope to provide unique combination of 2D and 3D integrated images of various types of materials. Current projects look closely on cell mechanics and real time changes to the cell membrane and cells morphology upon specific stimuli.
