Among the persistent challenges of contemporary life being addressed by Dr Vincent Gomes' research are the herpes simplex virus and graffiti. His work in bioengineering and polymer engineering aims to enhance the human condition by developing solutions to a diverse range of everyday problems. "In bioengineering, my goal is to develop nanomaterials for clinical and pharmaceutical applications. These are materials that are so small they are practically invisible to the human eye, but they possess exceptional properties with the potential to transform our world. One example is a treatment we are developing based on natural ingredients to help control and reduce the recurrence of the painful and persistent herpes simplex virus, which affects more than 75 percent of the Australian population and is common worldwide. "In polymer engineering, my goal is to develop new materials for use in applications from crop protection, animal health and waste-water treatment to advanced protective coatings for vehicles and for buildings. An example here is a range of coatings that my colleagues and I have developed, in collaboration with a multinational company, to combat the widespread urban nuisance of graffiti. The coatings provide effective protection to a variety of surfaces, and are now produced commercially and marketed globally, generating multi-million-dollar revenue for the company. "The excitement in this research comes from overcoming the challenges we face, doing more with less and seeing the outcomes of applications that enhance the human condition - such as by treating certain diseases or developing value-added products. These are issues that matter - not just because they whet our appetite for scientific curiosity, but because they have the potential for large-scale impact on our lives. "Working at the University of Sydney, I find the academic freedom and collegiality of great value. These allow me to pursue my goals and collaborate with my colleagues for enhanced outcomes."
