Discrete forms of amylose are synthesized by isoforms of GBSSI in pea Edwards, Anne, Vincken, Jean-Paul, Suurs, Luc C.J.M., Visser, Richard G.F., Zeeman, Samuel C., Smith, Alison M. and Martin, Cathie (2002) Amyloses with distinct molecular masses are found in the starch of pea embryos compared with the starch of pea leaves. In pea embryos, a granule-bound starch synthase protein (GBSSIa) is required for the synthesis of a significant portion of the amylose. However, this protein seems... Polymer-TiO2 nanocomposites Nussbaumer, René J., Caseri, Walter R., Smith, Paul and Tervoort, Theo (2003) Colloids of TiO2, where rutile was the only crystal modification which could be detected, with ca. 2.5 nm average particle diameter were synthesized by hydrolysis of TiCl4 in acidic solutions. The as-prepared particles were incorporated in polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol)... 'Latent' ultraviolet light absorbers Kocher, Christoph, Weder, Christoph and Smith, Paul (2003) We have synthesized and characterized photo-labile and acid-labile esters of 2-hydroxybenzophenone and 2-hydroxybenzotriazoles, which, upon appropriate treatment, release classical UV absorbers. Two concepts of 'latent' UV absorbers are presented, namely, benzoyl-caged species... (2003) A promising solution to the environmental instability of semiconducting organic materials is presented. Thin, highly ordered films (see Figure, a scanning probe microscopy image), fibers, and field-effect transistors (FETs), comprising chain-structures based on the so-called... Design, synthesis, and properties of new biodegradable aromatic/aliphatic liquid crystalline copolyesters Chen, Yiwang, Wombacher, Ralf, Wendorff, Joachim H., Visjager, Jeroen, Smith, Paul and Greiner, Andreas (2003) Liquid crystalline copolyesters of high molecular weight were obtained by polycondensation of aromatic diols, diacyl dichlorides, oligolactides, and poly(ethylene glycol)s. Hydrophilicity of the copolyesters was controlled by the content of ethyleneoxy moieties as verified by... The binary system isotactic polypropylene/bis(3,4-dimethylbenzylidene)sorbitol Kristiansen, Magnus, Werner, Michael, Tervoort, E., Smith, Paul, Blomenhofer, Markus and Schmidt, Hans-Werner (2003) The phase behavior of the binary system consisting of the commercial nucleating and clarifying agent 1,3:2,4-bis(3,4-dimethyldibenzylidene)sorbitol (DMDBS, Millad 3988) and isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) was investigated over the entire concentration range by means of differential... Polyamides X.34 Ehrenstein, Moritz, Smith, Paul and Weder, Christoph (2003) Full Paper: A new series of semi-crystalline polyamides (PA), which comprise extended aliphatic segments between the amide moieties and which display an interesting amphiphilic character has been synthesized and characterized. The polymers PA-2.34, PA-4.34, PA-8.34, PA-10.34, and... Synergistic gelation of solutions of isotactic polypropylene and bis-(3,4-dimethyl benzylidene) sorbitol and its use in gel-processing Kristiansen, Magnus, Tervoort, Theo and Smith, Paul (2003) We report the synergistic, rapid gelation of solutions of isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) and the nucleating agent 1,3:2,4-bis-(3,4-dimethyl benzylidene) sorbitol (DMDBS) in decalin. Cooling to room temperature of a solution comprising, for instance, 3.0 wt% of a moderately high... Dichroic Ultraviolet Light Filters Kocher, Christoph, Weder, Christoph and Smith, Paul (2003) With the intention to produce dichroic filters for use in photoluminescent systems that rely on polarized UV light, we synthesized a number of linear, dichroic dyes, which absorb mainly in the near-UV range of the electromagnetic spectrum. These dyes were designed for compatibility... Hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation of liquid-crystalline aromatic/aliphatic copolyesters Chen, Yiwang, Jia, Zhihong, Schaper, Andreas, Kristiansen, Magnus, Smith, Paul, Wombacher, Ralf, Wendorff, Joachim H. and Greiner, Andreas (2004) Aromatic/aliphatic copolyesters containing hydrophilic moieties in the main chain or side chain were synthesized by bulk polycondensation of aromatic monomers without or with solubilizing substituents and aliphatic monomers. Hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation studies were carried... Growth and anisotropic properties of highly oriented films of quasi-one-dimensional platinum compounds Fontana, Margherita, Chanzy, Henri, Stutzmann, Natalie, Caseri, Walter R. and Smith, Paul (2004) The semiconductors [Pt(NH(2)dmoc)(4)][PtCl4], where dmoc denotes (S)-3,7-dimethyloctyl, and [Pt(NH(2)eh)(4)][PtCl4], where eh is (R)-2-ethylhexyl, are soluble quasi-one-dimensional compounds with a backbone of linearly arranged platinum atoms.
