Corcoran Professor, headed the Department of Chemical Engineering as Executive Officer, and founded the Department of Control and Dynamical Systems.
Prof. Morari's research focuses on the development of methods for the analysis and design of control systems for switched dynamical systems ("hybrid systems") and their application to problems in the automotive, power electronics, and biomedical domains. He is also directing research projects on active vibration control, automation in anesthesia and the control of biochemical separation units.
Prof.Morari's research is internationally recognized. The analysis techniques and software developed in his group are used in universities and industry throughout the world. He has received numerous awards, including the Eckman Award from the American Automatic Control Council, the Colburn Award and the Professional Progress Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the McGraw Research Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. In 1993 Prof. Morari was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is included in the list of the most highly cited researchers in engineering by ISIHighlyCited.com. In 2005 Prof. Morari was named Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and received the IEEE Control Systems Field Award, the highest award of the IEEE in the control field.

Robust Receding Horizon Control
Grieder, Pascal, Parrilo, Pablo A. and Morari, Manfred (2003)
In this paper, a combined Receding Horizon Control (RHC) analysis and synthesis technique for constrained linear time-invariant systems subject to polytopic or additive uncertainty is introduced. The proposed method consists of two components. First, the maximum robust control...
Lagrange stability and performance analysis of discrete-time piecewise affine systems with logic states
Ferrari-Trecate, Giancarlo, Cuzzola, Francesco Alessandro and Morari, Manfred (2003)
In this paper we consider discrete-time piecewise affine systems with boolean inputs, outputs and states and show that they can be represented in a logic canonical form where the logic variables influence the switching between different submodels but not the continuous-valued...
Adaptive resonant shunted piezoelectric devices for vibration suppression
Niederberger, Dominik, Morari, Manfred and Pietrzko, Stanislaw J. (2003)
Efficient mode enumeration of compositional hybrid systems
Geyer, Tobias, Danilo Torrisi, Fabio and Morari, Manfred (2003)
A hyperplane arrangement is a polyhedral cell complex where the relative position of each cell of the arrangement and the composing hyperplanes are summarized by a sign vector computable in polynomial time. This tool from computational geometry enables the development of a fast and...
Multi-object Adaptive Cruise Control
Möbus, Rainer, Baotic, Mato and Morari, Manfred (2003)
In this paper we propose an algorithm for solving a Multi-Object Adaptive Cruise Control problem. In a multi-object traffic scene the optimal acceleration is to be found respecting traffic rules, safety distances and driver intentions. The objective function is modelled as a...
Hybrid systems modeling and control
Morari, Manfred, Baotić, Mato and Borrelli, Francesco (2003)
Piece-wise affine and mixed logical dynamical models for discrete time linear hybrid systems are reviewed. Constrained optimal control problems with linear and quadratic objective functions are defined. Some results on the structure and computation of the optimal control laws are...
Complexity reduction of receding horizon control

Complexity reduction of receding horizon control
Grieder, Pascal and Morari, Manfred (2003)
The off-line solution of constrained optimal control problems has garnered much attention because implementation can be realized with a simple look-up table. In this paper, a detailed complexity analysis of algorithms used to compute the explicit optimal control solution is given....
Optimization based adaptive control of Simulated Moving Beds
Abel, Stefanie, Mazzotti, Marco, Erdem, Gültekin, Morari, Manfred and Morbidelli, Massimo (2003)
In the recent years Simulated Moving Bed (SMB) technology has become more and more attractive for complex separation tasks. To ensure the compliance with product specifications, a robust control is required. In this work a new optimization based adaptive control strategy...
A clustering technique for the identification of piecewise affine systems
Ferrari-Trecate, Giancarlo, Muselli, Marco, Liberati, Diego and Morari, Manfred (2003)
We propose a new technique for the identification of discrete-time hybrid systems in the piecewise affine (PWA) form. This problem can be formulated as the reconstruction of a possibly discontinuous PWA map with a multi-dimensional domain. In order to achieve our goal, we provide...
Robotic orthosis Lokomat
Jezernik, Sašo, Colombo, Gery, Keller, Thierry, Frueh, Hansruedi and Morari, Manfred (2003)
The aim of this article is to introduce the robotic orthosis Lokomat, developed to automate treadmill training rehabilitation of locomotion for spinal cord injured and stroke patients, to the Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and Neuromodulation research communities, and to...
Operation of homogeneous azeotropic distillation column sequences
Ulrich, Jan and Morari, Manfred (2003)
A self-optimizing control concept is provided for sequences of three homogeneous azeotropic distillation columns with two recycles separating a ternary feed of a 020 mixture that has two simple distillation regions that are separated by a residue curve boundary. Studying a case...

Analysis and control of a turbulent coagulator
Bonanomi, Eleonora, Sefcik, Jan, Morari, Manfred and Morbidelli, Massimo (2004)
Recent developments of particle sizing sensors and control algorithms together with a better understanding of the physics of coagulation processes foster the application of advanced control systems to aggregating particulate systems in order to ensure the product quality despite...

Low complexity control of piecewise affine systems with stability guarantee
Grieder, Pascal, Kvasnica, Michal, Baotić, Mato and Morari, Manfred (2004)
Piecewise affine systems are powerful models for describing both non-linear and hybrid systems. One Of the key problems in controlling these systems is the inherent computational complexity of controller synthesis and analysis, especially if constraints on states and inputs are...
Stability analysis of hybrid systems with a linear performance index
Christophersen, Frank J., Baoti, Mato and Morari, Manfred (2004)
We consider the constrained finite time optimal control (CFTOC) problem for the class of discrete-time linear hybrid systems. For a linear performance index the solution to the CFTOC problem is a time-varying piecewise affine function of the state. However, when a receding horizon...
