Experimental Physical Chemistry/Nanoscience & Materials Chemistry/Chemical Physics/Energy & Catalysis

Research in the Johns lab focuses on chemical control of electronic processes at surface, 2D materials, and material interfaces. We are combining atomic and molecular resolution imaging techniques such scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic force microscopy with ultrafast spectroscopy to determine how the structure of material interfaces can facilitate or hinder charge transfer in photovoltaic and photocatalytic systems. We are also developing new methods for synthesizing monolayer thick materials so that they can be used for wide scale electronic and optical devices. Students in our lab gain exposure to a wide range of techniques including chemical vapor deposition, ultrafast spectroscopy, surface characterization and scanning probe microscopy.
