The Hillmyer Research Group efforts focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new macromolecular materials. In addition to the establishment of specific structure-property relationships, we also strive to discover and develop technologically important applications. Modern polymer synthesis techniques that include various controlled polymerizations and selective polymer modifications are at our disposal, and synthetic efforts provide the foundation for most projects. Ultimately, we aim to combine contemporary polymer synthesis with detailed molecular, morphological and property characterization in an effort to expand fundamental polymer science knowledge and advance new technologies. There is a strong emphasis in the group on hybrid macromolecular structures that combine disparate polymeric elements into a single compound and on the development of sustainable polymers from renewable resources. Project areas are often interrelated, and collaboration between group members is encouraged. Furthermore, we have established several formal cooperative relationships with other research groups at the University of Minnesota. The overall polymer science effort at the University of Minnesota is wide-ranging, and the extensive infrastructure and collaborative nature of the faculty truly fosters a unique research environment.
