个人简介

Florian Wurm received his academic training as a biologist and molecular geneticist at the University of Giessen, Germany. He joined the subsidiary of Hoechst AG, Behringwerke in Marburg as head of a laboratory in Virology. Working with immortalized mammalian cells for the establishment of production processes for alpha-interferons provided the first opportunity to combine basic research with medical application. In 1984 he joined Harvard Medical School in Boston as a Research Fellow in Molecular Biology. 1986 he took an offer from Genentech Inc. in San Francisco to work in Process Sciences on the (Upstream) Development of large scale manufacturing processes for recombinant proteins. He has held a number of leading positions at Genentech and has acquired intimate knowledge on the creation of novel pharmaceutical components based on recombinant DNA technology. In 1995 he joined the EPFL as a newly appointed Professor for Biotechnology. F.M. Wurm has published more than 200 scientific papers and holds 20 patents. He is member of the Executive Board of the European Society of Animal Cell Technology and he is or was a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of a number of companies as well as of the International Aids Vaccine Initiative, an institution of the Rockefeller Foundation. Prof. Wurm serves as a consultant to the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry, mainly in the fields of animal cell technology for recombinant protein production and in regulatory affairs. He works in an editorial role and as scientific reviewer for a number of international journals, such as Nature Biotechnology, Journal of Biotechnology, Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Biotechnology Progress and Cytotechnology. F.M. Wurm teaches classes to pre- and postgraduate students in the fields of Molecular and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at EPFL. He is founder and Chief Scientific Officer of ExcellGene SA, a company established in 2001 in Monthey, Switzerland. In 2008 Dr. Wurm was appointed Visiting Professor for Biotechnology at Jinan University in Guangzhou, China. Academic Education 1976: Justus Liebig University of Giessen, Germany: Diploma in Biology (summa cum laude) 1979: Justus Liebig University of Giessen, Germany, Institut für Genetik, Prof. Dr. Fritz Anders: Dr. rer. nat. (cum laude) Professional activities 1980 to 1985: Behringwerke Marburg Hoechst AG, Dept. of Virology, Scientist/Groupleader 1985 to 1986: Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA (Massachusetts Gen. Hospital, Dept. of Mol. Biology): Visiting Scientist 1986 to 1995: Genentech Inc., South San Francisco, California, USA (Cell Culture Research & Development, Process Sciences): Scientist, Group-Leader, Senior Scientist, Project-Team-Leader, Senior Manager 1995: Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland: Associate Professor 1995 - 1998: Laboratory of Cellular Biotechnology, Centre de Biotechnologie UNIL-EPFL, ISP-FSB, Associate Professor of Biotechnology Co-Director Centre de Biotechnologie UNIL-EPFL 1996 - 1999: Coordinator Biotechnology Priority Program (SPP) of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) April 1998 - present: Full Professor of Biotechnolgy, Faculty of Life Science, EPFL

研究领域

Several research projects addressing gene transfer, genetics, cytogenetics of recombinant protein expression in mammalian cells Remark: Several of the projects for which I had full or partial managerial and scientific responsibility are now marketed products, such as Activase®-TPA, Herceptin®-anti Her2antibody, TNKase-TPA, Pulmozyme®-huDNase. Process development work was done for cell cultures up to the 10 000 Liter scale.
