研究领域
Polyelectrolytes, charged macromolecules, and their organized structures
- belong to an emerging class of materials and are one of the key topics, internationally, in polymer chemistry and physics.
- include synthetic compounds but also biopolymers, such as proteins, nucleic acids, or polysaccharides.
- play a central role in the life sciences and have increasing importance as specialty polymers in many fields including environmental technologies, biotechnology, and materials development.
Function and application primarily rely on electrostatic interactions with either low molar mass counterions, charged surfaces, or oppositely charged molecules.
The aim of our research is to study polyelectrolyte interactions as a function of the macromolecular parameters, on one hand, and medium conditions and characteristics of the interacting partner, on the other hand. The research includes the synthesis of defined molecule architectures, their characterization, fundamental interaction studies, and the development of novel materials for various applications, preferably in the biomedical. Of specific interest are hydrogels and hydrocolloids for tissue engineering, immobilization, and delivery systems with micro and nano dimensions.
