Associate Professor Walker is a senior research fellow based at the Hunter Medical Research Institute. He currently is chief investigator within the University of Newcastle's Priority Research Center in Stroke and Traumatic Brain Injury and a named research fellow for the NHMRC Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation.
Associate Professor Walker obtained his PhD from the Univeristy of Newcastle in the field of Neuroimmunology in 2006. Dr Walker then joined the systems neuroscience laboratory of Professor Trevor Day, in the School of Biomedical Sciences & Pharmacy, as an NHMRC funded postdoctoral researcher. During this time he investigated brain mechanisms that underpin individual differences in vulnerability to psychological stress. In 2007 Dr Walker was awarded an NHMRC Biomedical (Peter Doherty) Postdoctoral Fellowship. During this time his work became increasingly focused on the role of glia and neuroimmune alterations in mood disturbances. In 2009 he established the Affective Neuroscience and Neuroimmunology research group at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Over the past several years Dr Walker’s research has been focused on the role of neuroinflammation, mood disturbance and dementia. He has established himself as an emerging researcher leader in the field and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences, and called upon to review NHMRC grant applications and scientific manuscripts. His work is currently supported by the NHMRC and the Hunter Medical Research Institute and several philanthropic societies.
