Within the broad field of materials and mechanical engineering, Prof. Cheng Yan and his team are conducting the research in the following areas: 1) Materials Engineering and Nanotechnology Nanocomposites (e.g. particle, carbon nanotube and graphene polymer nanocomposites) Nanowires for sustainable energy and environment applications (e.g. TiO2) Hydrogen storage materials (light alloys) Porous ceramics for biomedical applications (e.g. scaffold) Utilization of environment hazard materials (e.g. red mud, fly ash) 2) Mechanical Characterization and Numerical Modeling Nanomechanics and thin films Deformation mechanisms in metallic glasses and nanocrystalline alloys Thermal-mechanical behavior of micro and nanosystems (MEMS, optoelectronic packages) Finite element modeling of various materials Molecular dynamics modeling of nanomaterials and biomaterials (e.g. carbon nanotube, graphene, nanopillars, bone, interfaces) 3) Solid Mechanics and Structure Analysis Materials strength and failure analysis (steels, light alloys, polymers and ceramics) Fatigue and fracture mechanics Composite and light weight structures Welded, soldered and adhesive structures Structure health monitoring and smart materials Thin bed masonry structure
