Molecular dynamics of hydrated cartilage biopolymers: The aim of this project is to study molecular dynamics of hydrated collagen and proteoglycans – biopolymers forming the molecular scaffold of cartilage. The objective is to investigate the effect of aligned collagen fibres on NMR properties of tissue water, and to use that information for interpretation of cartilage MR images.
NMR spectroscopy and MR microimaging of cartilage: This project involves the development of state-of-the-art techniques of cartilage microimaging: diffusion-tensor imaging, MRI mechanical-load consolidometry, and quantitative relaxation-weighted imaging. The aim is to characterise the macromolecular structure of the tissue scaffold; study its response to mechanical load and enzymatic degradation; and to identify reliable MRI signatures of early osteoarthritis.
NMR and computational studies of bicontinuous cubic phases: BCPs are thermodynamically stable lipids/water systems used to model the biophysics of lipid bilayers. We use Monte Carlo simulations and NMR spectroscopy to investigate the relationship between microstructure, molecular mobility, and molecular transport properties of BCPs. The aim is to develop an in vitro permeability model of the lipid bilayer.
