个人简介

After obtaining my undergraduate medical degree and Bachelor of Medical Science from the University of Melbourne in 1993, I completed my residency in Melbourne before moving to Townsville to pursue clinical and academic interests in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and population health. In terms of clinical training I completed my general practice training (FRACGP) in 2004, including advanced rural skills in Indigenous health, and have worked in general practice largely in community controlled health services, but also in private general practice. In terms of academic training I completed a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine through JCU in 2001, and in 2007 completed my PhD through the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Indigenous Australian Studies. My doctoral studies involved working with young Indigenous women in Townsville using mixed methods and a participatory approach to investigate attitudes and behaviours around relationships, sex, contraception and pregnancy, and I was supervised during this work by Professor Craig Veitch and Professor Sue McGinty.

研究领域

These revolve around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, particularly in the areas of maternal, child, family and reproductive health but also in working with communities to develop, implement and evaluate sustainable interventions and improve access to health services for Indigenous Australians, rural residents, adolescents and other underserved populations. I am interested in using participatory approaches in working with young people and communities and community participation in health service development. Other interests include socially accountable health professional education, Indigenous research capacity-building, and doctors’ health.
